----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Linguistic Field Manual and Grammar Outline for Shoebox 4 and later ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This folder contains files that attempt to step people through the process of analyzing the morphosyntax of any language. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Setup Procedure To make your own grammar outline with Shoebox, proceed as follows: 1. Make a folder where you wish to maintain your grammar outline. For example, in Windows you might make a C:\Ublek\Ling folder. (Don't keep your data under the Shoebox folder, where the program and sample linguistic files will be updated the next time you upgrade Shoebox.) 2. From the Shoebox\Ling folder, copy these files to your data folder: Grammar.db Bibliog.db (*) LingManl.db (*) (* These should never be modified and so technically don't need to be copied, but it is simpler to copy them all if you have disk space.) From the Shoebox\Ling folder, copy these files to your "My Shoebox Settings" folder (MYSHSET in Win 3.1): Analysis.prj Bibliogr.typ GramNote.typ LingNote.typ If English.lng is not already in "My Shoebox Settings", you should copy it as well. 3. Open the project Analysis.prj in your "My Shoebox Settings" folder (MYSHSET in Win 3.1). (From the Shoebox menu, use Project-Open.) Shoebox should prompt you because the project files have been moved. You must navigate to your data folder to open the databases you copied there. NOTE: If Shoebox did not prompt you to find the Grammar database, you must close it and open your copied database, navigating to your data folder. Be sure you do not open the Grammar.db database in the Shoebox\Ling folder. 4. Before you start to enter vernacular data in the grammar outline, customize the data field for vernacular examples to use the appropriate language encoding: a. Choose Project, Database types from the Shoebox menu. b. Select Grammar Outline. c. Choose Modify. d. Select \xv example-vernacular. e. Choose Modify. f. Select the appropriate language encoding. g. Choose OK, OK, Close. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Using the Field Manual and Grammar Outline For more information on the helps themselves, go to the first record in the LINGMANL.DB database. Terse instructions can also be found in a record called INSTRUCTIONS in the GRAMMAR.DB file. This analysis/helps system is designed so that the GRAMMAR.DB database file becomes the repository of all your data. It is expected that you would work in the GRAMMAR.DB entering any relevant data, answers to questions found in the Linguistic Helps database. Use the jump feature of Shoebox (right-click on the cross-reference) to jump to information, helps, and questions in the manual that pertain to the outline topic you are working on in the GRAMMAR.DB file. You should NEVER put language data in the LINGMANL database itself. It is intended as a reference only. It is already a very large database (nearly 1 Megabyte), and using it to store your data will result in a very unwieldy file, and you would find your data becoming difficult to locate in amongst all of the reference information. The GRAMMAR.DB outline file is nearly empty except for the needed cross-reference information and section headings. Be sure not to change any Manual or Grammar Outline fields that are marked as "No word wrap". If Shoebox is sets to wrap these fields or set to display them with a proportional spaced font, all of the interlinear examples in the manual will be messed up. The Manual and the Grammar Outline use two separate (but identical) "TYP" files. This is to give you freedom and flexibility to tweak your grammar outline field markers to meet your needs without fear that your tweaks will corrupt the Manual. (But you are still advised not to change the "no wrap" fields, like \cf, in order to keep the cross- reference outlines aligned.) -------------------------------------------------------------------- The user of this system is asked to keep in mind that it is a preliminary version, distributed as an example and for the purpose of user feedback. If you should find yourself modifying the helps or the grammar outline in any way, please take the time to send a note to: Linguistic Field Manual Development Team Coordinator Intl. Linguistics Department 7500 W. Camp Wisdom Rd Dallas, TX 75236 USA In the note, describe the changes you made and why you made them. This will be a tremendous help as the final version of the system is developed. -------------------------------------------------------------------- FILES INCLUDED: -------------------------------------------------------------------- ANALYSIS.PRJ Shoebox Project file for loading this stuff LINGMANL.DB Linguistic Field Manual and Helps Database BIBLIOG.DB Bibliography database of references cited in the above GRAMMAR.DB Grammar outline database of the Linguistic Field Manual LINGNOTE.TYP SH database type file for the Manual database BIBLIOGR.TYP SH database Type file for the Bibliography database GRAMNOTE.TYP SH database type file for the Grammar Outline LMREADME.TXT This file
