State any expected negative impact of your research on the people involved. Attach a copy of all stimulus materials, questionnaires, protocols, and a description of any equipment used. Use additional space as needed. The purpose of this project is to document an endangered language through recordings and transcriptions and, with proper permissions, to use these materials for educational purposes, both within the communities of origin (Nahuatl-speaking villages in the Balsas River valley of central Guerrero, Mexico) and beyond (particularly in the United States). The recordings are generally of stories, archaic texts, information on the natural environment, and life history testimonials. Digital recordings are carried out in the field with a clearly visible recording device and a headset or lavalier microphone. The materials are then placed on computers for transcription. Copies (on cassette or music CD, depending on the equipment available to the original consultant) of all recordings are given to the authors. At recording permission is sought (all in Nahuatl, a language in which I am fluent) to use these materials for community and extra-community education. There are three levels of consent, each explained and documented in conversations with the consultant/author: LEVEL 1: consent to record and transcribe and to use the material outside of the community for educational and research purposes, allowing the material to be made available to students and scholars. Consultants/authors are told that any sensitive material on the recording will be removed (e.g., personal comments or information that could be used commercially, e.g, on medicinal plants). This discussion and the informed consent (see attached form: Level 1 consent) are recorded. Consultants/authors will always be given the material to review and edit before it is distributed beyond the community (e.g., in the US). In the event that they change their mind about the original agreement to scholarly and limited distribution, they will at this review stage be allowed to restrict the distribution even further (in accord with access restrictions now in place in many digital libraries, e.g, the Archive of Indigenous Languages of Latin America at the University of Texas). The nature of Internet distribution will be explained in Nahuatl in terms familiar to all participants (e.g., access to a recording as through a telephone, one can dial up and hear the text, etc.); LEVEL 2: consent to distribute the recordings and transcriptions to communities and bilingual schools in the area for non-profit educational and revitalization efforts that are now underway. At this time consultants/authors will again hear the text and see the transcription in final form; they will be allowed to remove any part of the recording/transcription (through sound/text editing) and determine the level of acknowledgement (named or anonymous). At this time they will be given a written consent form (in Nahuatl and Spanish, which will be read to them) to sign documenting the allowed community and school use. They will be monetarily compensated for this level of distribution as authors of a published text. No commercial or for-profit use will be allowed. The consultants/authors may also decide not to release this material for local community and educational use. LEVEL 3: consent for commercial use of the recording. In the event that wider, commercial distribution of the recordings and transcriptions is sought, this will need to be arranged through a further contractual arrangement (note that Level 2 does not allow for-profit or commercial use). This separate arrangement with the authors/consultants will be undertaken with the organization or individual seeking commercial use. If subjects are chosen from records, indicate who gave approval for the use of those records. Subjects are recruited on a volunteer basis from the general population of the Balsas River valley. Almost all are elderly fluent speakers of Nahuatl who I know either personally or through mutual friends. They will be contacted/recruited on the basis of knowledge that I have of language skills of different community members. c) How are subjects initially contacted? (e.g., ads, telephone, mail). If you are sending out a mailing or using advertisements, please attach a complete, formatted copy in its final draft. If you are using telephone calls, attach a complete, verbatim protocol of the telephone interview. I have lived in the area intermittently (a total of six years residence) since 1978. All consultants/authors are known to me or are friends of collaborators. The consultants/authors are approached personally. The project (documentation and education) is clearly explained and Level 1 consent recorded at the end of each session. d) Will subjects receive inducements before or rewards after the study? If so, explain. Consultant participation is voluntary at the first stage of recording (which is usually less than hour). However, in cases in which there is long-term collaboration/consulting and recording is a part of this longer effort, compensation is given as a half-day, day, or week rate that is calculated to match that of a skilled individual in the area (such as a schoolteacher or bricklayer). In the event that the materials will be used non-commercially as school texts in Mexico or the United States a second level of consent is always obtained. At this point monetary compensation is given (as to an author) and the text is played back for the consultant to ensure that there are no objections (as often the consultant/author may not remember what was on the original recording). If the text has any information that could be objectionable (e.g, personal comments on other community members) this is edited out (either during transcription or now at the request of the consultant/author). The consultant/author is also able at this time to decide: 1) to edit the text further 2) to agree or prohibit further distribution to the schools and communities of the region (in which case the material is maintained at Level 1 consent and access) 3) to request anonymity but permit distribution 3) Privacy Considerations: Will the data be (check one): As best fieldwork practice, I maintain a confidential database of information pertinent to all recordings (date, consultant data, genre, length, recording equipment, etc.). Consultants/authors may request anonymity even at Level 1 consent, although in general they request recognition of their expertise and authorship. This is usually desired by the consultant. If the consultant/author so requests, all distribution/publication of the material clearly recognizes their expertise authorship. ( Anonymous (No names associated with data) ( Confidential (Names associated with data but not revealed by researcher) a) If neither, indicate why. b) Will information about participation in the study be available to supervisors, teachers, employers, etc.? If yes, indicate to whom and why. c) If data are not anonymous, explain the procedures to maintain privacy. 4) Informed Consent: How will you obtain informed consent? In questionnaire and interview research, agreeing to answer the questions is usually taken as consent to participate in the study. However, a full verbatim protocol of the questions to be asked must be attached to this form. The protocol should include a description of the study that will be given to the respondents. Most other types of research will need to have subjects sign an informed consent sheet. If needed, attach a sample informed consent sheet. Not applicable: there is no interview in this research. Consultants are asked to provide material in the area of their expertise (e.g., childrens stories, religious stories, knowledge of agriculture, etc.). The recordings are not interrupted by the researcher: the consultant proceeds until the recording is complete on the specific topic. This may be short (e.g, in a discussion of the preparation of certain foods, like tortillas) or long (certain religious stories). 5) Potentially Sensitive Topics: Does the research planned in this project involve: (check all that apply) ( Questions involving possible invasion of privacy of subject or family, including personal information or records. ( The administration of physical stimuli other than the normal auditory, tactile, and visual stimuli associated with classroom situations. However, research always imposes a cost on participants (for instance, the time required to participate). Why does the value of doing this particular research study outweigh whatever cost there is to the people involved in the research ? This research is oriented to language documentation, literacy training, and education in Nahuatl. It has been supported by the Mexican Secretary of Public Education (where I am an advisor) and by the local bilingual school supervisors. The present project to continue this research and educational activity will be submitted to the National Science Foundation. The major goal of this research is to document endangered language and culture and, with the required consent, to make this material available to the local educational institutions (as well as to students and researchers outside the community, again with the proper consent forms documented above). LEVEL 1: informed consent. At this point consultants/authors will have the project explained to them and their consent requested for distribution outside of the local community for research and educational purposes. All explanations requests for consent will be given in Nahuatl in translation of the following below. 1) Project description (here I mention my goals and how this recording fits in with the goals) My goals are to document local knowledge by recording what you have to say to me and then writing down exactly what you have said. I would like to allow people to hear this material for free and they can do so (here an explanation of Internet distribution) by using a machine similar to a telephone. They dial up and request to hear this text. They can hear it and follow the written version in Nahuatl and their own language (English or Spanish). I will play this recording back to you later so that you can hear it and ask me to remove any parts that you wish to be maintained confidential (so that no one hears them). What is your name? What village are you from? How old are you? Do you agree that I can let people here the material you have just recorded and do you understand that they will be allowed to do this for free, with no one making money from selling this recording? Do you understand that if I want to make this material available locally (to the communities and schools) I will ask your permission separately.
