Primero, se busca un palo como de cinco codos de largo, un palo que tiene un extremo más grueso que el otro. Si el palo es todo delgado, no se endereza bien y entonces el pájaro se escapa. Esto es, el palo debe tener la forma de un poste de luz (más delgado a la parte superior una vez ya empotrado). Al extremo más delgado se amarra el mi:nkat y el bozal. El bozal se hace o de fibra de pita que se obtiene tallando la hoja de la planta con el lomo de un machete o del hilo que ocupan los albañiles. Pero el hilo de la pita es más resistente. Como alimento para atraer a los pájaros a la trampa se ponen pedacitos de cáscara de naranja o de zapote negro.
