* It seems that `-l' and `-g' will not work correctly together (IPv6). Wait for "flow label" API to be appeared in glibc-kernheaders and think about it immediately after that... :) * Tune default parameters properly. Maybe increase value for the `-N' (sim_probes), maybe decrease `-w' secs to 4.0 instead of 5.0 (as Network is faster now). * Verbose output. Show method in use, what ports we are connecting to, more info about icmp response etc. * Implement a "UDP with constant dest_port" method. Would be useful to trace for firewalled DNS or IPsec hosts etc. It requires the packet sent should be correct for the particular dest application (i.e., correct DNS request), and the application normally should answer something on it. (TCP has no such an issue, as there are just syn to, and ack or reset from). It means that we should fill the packet's data depending on the dest port specified. In general, a cmdline option needed to specify such data explicitly. Don't forget that (unlike TCP) UDP sockets auto-binds to the latest freed port. To avoid this (i.e., to cause all src_port to differ), use "open tmp_sk, open work_sk, close tmp_sk" ... Can re-assign `-U' option just for this method (and without any of [ITU] just the default udp method will used). * Maybe implement a "Generic IP" method, i.e. allow to use any IP proto (not tcp/udp/icmp only). Requires the same data correctness as for "UDP to dest port" method. * Maybe create some "adaptive" method -- for example, if udp probe expires, then try icmp for that hop etc... Maybe "IP Record Routing" can help too (if it is supported by routers now). * Maybe catch situations when "port unreach" is sent from the same host as last ttl-exceed. It means that the last host is a firewall which filters some udp/tcp ports. It seems that it is better to show some "!x" here, but the original traceroute does not behave so.
