<html> <!-- Created with the CoffeeCup HTML Editor --> <!-- http://www.coffeecup.com/ --> <!-- Brewed on 3/12/2003 8:37:47 PM --> <head> <title></title> </head> <body> <font size="+1">One of the most interesting aspects of Oapan Nahuatl is the development of pitch accent from historical *h. In the lexicon itself there are thousands of words that manifest this tonogenetic phenomenon. If inflected words are added, literally tens of thousands of such words occur, an excellent base for prosodic studies of Oapan Nahuatl. An example of a lexically accented transitive verb is <i>ìtowá</i> 'to say.' This contains the root <i><a href="http://hyperlex2.ldc.upenn.edu/nahuatl/search_results.php4?user_lang=english&entry_template=englishwhole.html&query_type=user_defined&condition=(xrb_REGEXP_'^hto$|%hto$|^hto[,.?!]?%'_)"><font color="#800000">hto</font></a></i>, and a list generated of all words with this root demonstrates that it is the root, and the historical *h in this root, that motivates lexical accent. <p> <font size="+1">Noun incorporation is one of the most interesting phenomena that can be researched in a language such as Nahuatl. To begin with, there are two basic ways in which Noun Incorporation can affect the valency of a verb. First, it may lower the valency, as exemplified by transitive verbs that after the incorporation of a noun <a href="http://hyperlex2.ldc.upenn.edu/nahuatl/search_results.php4?user_lang=english&entry_template=englishwhole.html&query_type=user_defined&condition=(psm_REGEXP_'^-?\'?(v2)|%v2'_)_AND_(inc_REGEXP_'^-?\'?(n-v2)|%n-v2'_)"><font color="#800000">remain transitive</font></a>. However, there are also many cases (though interestingly much fewer) in which Noun Incorporation does lower the valency of the verb (as exemplified by those transitive verbs that after the incorporation of a noun <a href="http://hyperlex2.ldc.upenn.edu/nahuatl/search_results.php4?user_lang=english&entry_template=englishwhole.html&query_type=user_defined&condition=(psm_REGEXP_'^-?\'?(v1)|%v1'_)_AND_(inc_REGEXP_'^-?\'?(n-v2)|%n-v2'_)"><font color="#800000">become intransitive</font></a>. <p> It is also possible to use a generic table to test for certain paradigmatic relations. Go to the generic table by clicking <a href="http://hyperlex2.ldc.upenn.edu/nahuatl/main_search.php4?user_lang=english&entry_template=generic"><font color="#800000">here</font></a>. </font></font></body> </html>
